CDM-UK is proud to announce the successful completion of an exciting project for The Church of Scotland. Tasked with transforming the historic Newtongrange Parish Church from a traditional place of worship into a modern, multi-functional community centre.
This extensive refurbishment project highlights our commitment to precision, innovation, and quality craftsmanship.
The transformation of Newtongrange Parish Church required careful planning and execution to preserve the building’s historic character while meeting the needs of a contemporary community centre.
Here’s a detailed look at the scope of works that brought this project to life.
The project began with the installation of essential preliminary works, including a welfare unit, generator, temporary lighting, and secure Heras fencing. This ensured a safe and efficient workspace from the outset.
To ensure the safety of all involved, chipboard flooring was installed in the loft space for secure access. Comprehensive asbestos testing identified acoustic panels containing asbestos, which were safely removed by accredited specialists.
The existing lath-and-plaster ceiling was stripped, and timber joists were reinforced where necessary. The ceiling was then expertly sheeted with 9.5mm plasterboard, Access was provided by scissor lifts.
A 500mm stone wall at the rear of the building was removed to create a new entrance, paving the way for a more accessible layout. New internal stud partitions were constructed using high-quality metal-framed studs, Gyproc wallboards, and acoustic wool insulation to ensure both durability and soundproofing.
One of the highlights of the project was the custom white oak single-glazed screen and bi-folding doors, handcrafted by CDM-UK and expertly installed on-site. Crafted with the same material a bespoke feature wall was created on the kitchen’s exterior, tying in an aesthetic design throughout the property. A new timber ceiling was added to the kitchen area, enhancing it’s warmth and character.
The project involved a full electrical overhaul, including rewiring, installation of distribution boards, emergency lighting, fire alarms, and energy-efficient photovoltaic panels. These upgrades ensure that the building meets modern standards while reducing it’s environmental footprint.
To meet community needs, a brand-new kitchen was designed, supplied, and installed, along with modern vinyl flooring and skirting. Washrooms, including accessible facilities with alarms, were installed, complete with high-quality fixtures and fittings.
The project extended outdoors with the construction of a new connection manhole and drainage system, ensuring seamless functionality and long-term durability.
All ceilings, walls, and partitions were taped, filled, and decorated to perfection, breathing new life into the interiors. The combination of fresh design and meticulous detailing has created a welcoming, functional space for the community to enjoy.
